Balos Lagoon — West Coast, Near Kissamos
The shot every Crete brochure uses: a shallow turquoise sandbar cutting between the mainland and Gramvousa island. The road in is rough and the walk down to the beach itself is steep, which is why most visitors take the boat cruise from Kissamos instead — it also stops at the Venetian fortress on Gramvousa. Go early; the lagoon has almost no shade and gets crowded by midday.
Elafonisi — Southwest Tip
A shallow lagoon over pink-tinged sand, warm and calm enough for genuinely relaxed swimming rather than just photos. Falassarna — West Coast, Near Kissamos
Closer and less crowded than Balos, with a long stretch of sand and some of the best sunsets on the west coast. A good choice if Balos's crowds or access road put you off, though the water is sometimes rougher with wave action.
Matala — South Coast
A curved bay backed by carved sandstone caves that housed a hippie colony in the 1960s and 70s — more about the setting and history than the swim itself, and an easy day trip from Heraklion or Rethymno.
